Mountain CabinI like looking out the window and watching the first big wet snowflakes dance to earth. They swirl a bit and fall sideways in the wind. I can see under the low gray clouds that the snow is having better luck sticking at higher elevations.I build up the fire and draw the heavy curtains closed around the back of the room. I pour a cup of hot chocolate and return to my window. I watch the clouds, they are so close. They hang on the pines until torn away slowly by the random and mysterious wind. I watch the bare trees and drops of water streak down the foggy glass. The more it snows, the quieter it becomes -- An occasional 'pop' from the fireplace. Outside a muffled crackling of dry leaves rousted from their pile by a whirlwind. I sit at the window and sip at my drink. I think of things... Mittens, muffs, rubber boots and big warm hats. Snowball fights, snowshoe hikes and children discovering snow angels. Skiing lessons, sled rides, snowmen and women scattered throughout the village. Cold nights, warm fires, thick quilts and good books. I think of how much I like looking out the window. |
