The TrailThere are times where some folks just have to getaway. I like to get off to somewhere different, quiet, and where I can be with myself. Sometimes, I like to get a bit away from myself too. When things seem a little more complex than I'd like...There's something about the mornings in the San Gabriels. When the sun slides sideways through the trees and the sky above is the deepest of blue. The ridiculous antics of squirrels at the lower parts of the trail, the occasional solid stuccatto of a knot-headed woodpecker. The trail wound around and up, though the pine and oak trees, into the slotted sunlight. A muffled crunching of sticks and leaves under my boots as I wandered up the path. Switchbacks crossing their way up the slope and over the rise. Acorn in the oak were ripening. Higher up the trail broke through a lichen spotted outcropping of rock. Colorful, dry, and hundreds of years old this type of fungi decorates the shady side of the jagged stone. From here the tall grass greened both sides of the bare trail straight along the ridge into a treed flat. The sun was golden and bright, and felt great on my arms and face. There was a log. Right there in the shade. Just a few yards off the trail, and just the right height for sitting on. So I sat and sipped at my water and for the most part just gazed around and took in the sights. In the distance, but not too far away, I could hear a bird whistling. A low, slow, periodic wild sound. I closed my eyes and just listened. The bird continued on. Some things are meant "special -- just for us". It may not be the biggest thing, or the greatest miracle, but something small and seemingly insignificant. None the less, its there and just for us. Reflecting on this and that, forgeting concerns that would take care of themselves and discarding problems I could do nothing about. Funny how clarity is an absence. |
